The Maiden Tower is perhaps the most enigmatic structure within the Walled City and a focal point of Azerbaijani national identity. Rising to a height of 29 meters, its unique cylindrical form is buttressed by a large projecting masonry mass on its eastern side.
The function and date of the tower have been subjects of intense scholarly debate for over a century. While the upper masonry dates clearly to the 12th century, archaeological investigations suggest that the lower courses may date back as far as the 7th or 6th centuries BC.
