Rooted in the traditions of the Great Silk Road, the kelaghayi is an exquisite silk headscarf produced primarily in the historic centres of Sheki and Basgal. The creation process employs the ancient “batik” (wax-resist) method, in which hot wax is applied using wooden stamps to preserve intricate patterns before dyeing. The designs, particularly the “buta” (paisley), carry deep symbolic meanings, representing fire and eternity, while the colour palette dictates social usage—red symbolising joy for brides, and darker tones reserved for mourning or for older women. This art form serves as a vivid expression of cultural identity and reinforces the social role of women in Azerbaijani society.
