Carpet weaving is a traditional craft of immense cultural significance in Azerbaijan, characterised by distinct regional schools that employ specific patterns, colours, and weaving techniques. Far more than a floor covering, the carpet is a symbol of the home and family unit, as reflected in the local proverb: “Where my carpet is, there is my home.”
The process involves the entire family—from men shearing sheep in the spring to women collecting natural dyes and weaving complex geometric and floral designs during the winter. Carpets serve various social functions, being used in weddings, birth celebrations and mourning rituals, effectively chronicling the history and lifestyle of the community.
