Marionette Theatre
The Marionette Theatre is located in one of the historic buildings of the ancient Icherisheher of Baku. The 19th century building was purposefully reconstructed in 2016 to house the marionette theatre, with the opening ceremony taking place on the same day as the premiere of the performance based on Uzeyir Hajibeyli’s Leyli and Majnun.
By fusing the Western musical traditions with the Eastern mugham tradition, Uzeyir Hajibeyli, the founder of Azerbaijani classical music, created a new genre known as mugham opera. His Leyli and Majnun, first performed in 1908, is regarded as the first opera of the Eastern world.
The Marionette Theatre’s production is, in turn, a more compact and modern vision of Hajibeyli’s work, which has received wide recognition from international audiences, including the World Festival of Marionette Theatres in Charleville-Mezieres, France.
You can watch Leyli and Majnun at the Marionette Theatre on May 9, 16, 20, 23, and 30.
