Chovqan, a traditional Karabakh horse riding game

17 january 2026

Chovqan is a traditional equestrian game played on a flat, grassy field by two competing teams mounted on the famous Garabagh horses. Widely considered to be the ancient ancestor of modern polo, the game is accompanied by specific instrumental folk music (“Jangi”) that dictates the rhythm of the match.

Chovqan is deeply rooted in the nomadic culture of the region and serves as a testament to the agility and endurance of the Garabagh horse breed. The practice strengthens a sense of national identity and courage, with skills and rules transmitted collectively from experienced players to younger generations.
