The Art of Azerbaijani Ashiq is a multifaceted performance tradition that synthesises poetry, storytelling, dance and vocal and instrumental music. The ashiq, often accompanying themselves on the saz (a traditional long-necked lute), performs a vast repertoire of classic songs and dastans (epic tales). Regarded as a guardian of national identity and the Azerbaijani language, this art form promotes cultural exchange and social dialogue. It is a living tradition, widely practised at weddings, festive gatherings and on concert stages throughout the country.
In 2009, the art of Azerbaijani Ashiqs was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
