05 february 2026

UNESCO World Heritage Site (2019): The Historic Centre of Shaki with the Khan’s Palace, is recognized byUNESCO in 2019 as a World Heritage Site, acknowledged for their outstanding universal value.

Shebeke mastery: 5,000+ pieces of coloured Murano glass set in wooden latticework assembled entirely without nails or glue — pinnacle of Azerbaijani architectural artistry. The shebeke windows of the Shaki Khan’s Palace represent one of the world’s most sophisticated examples of the integration of light, colour, and geometry within the Islamic architectural tradition.

Exquisite murals: Hunting scenes, floral motifs, and geometric patterns created by master artists including Mirza Qanbar Garabaghi, Abbas Qulu, Qurban Qulu, and Mirza Jafar from Shamakhi.

Architectural synthesis: A blending of Safavid, Qajar, and local Azerbaijani traditions. Built under Muhammad Husayn Khan Mushtaq, the palace served as the administrative centre (Divankhana) of the Shaki Khanate and highlights Shaki’s role as the khanate centre and a major trading city.
