The New Era: Stability and Urban Revival

05 february 2026

Starting from 1993, Azerbaijan entered a period of political stability and economic revival. This period played a decisive role in the country's emergence on the path of modern development.

The “Contract of the Century”, signed in 1994, laid the foundation for Azerbaijan’s integration into international energy markets. This historic agreement ensured the country's economic independence and created a financial source for future development.

The restoration and modernization of urban infrastructure began. The renewal of roads, bridges, water and sewage systems was declared a priority. Projects for the protection and restoration of Baku’s historic centre were implemented.

The introduction of the national currency - the manat (1992) - and economic reforms accelerated the country's transition to a market economy. Conditions were created for privatization programmes and the development of entrepreneurship.

State programmes for the restoration of education, healthcare, and social infrastructure were implemented. This period became the starting point for Azerbaijan’s transformation into a modern, dynamically developing country.
