International Media Delegation Explores Baku’s Historical and Cultural Landmarks During WUF13
As part of the thirteenth session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), hosted in Azerbaijan from 17 to 22 May 2026, foreign journalists visiting the country took part in a media tour of Baku’s historical and cultural landmarks. Organised jointly by the Media Development Agency and the WUF13 Azerbaijan Operations Company, the initiative sought to highlight Azerbaijan’s development priorities and achievements in sustainable urban development to the international media community.
The first stop for the international media delegation was Baku White City, widely regarded as one of the most prominent examples of large-scale urban transformation in the region. During the visit, journalists were introduced to the project’s urban planning concept, designed around the idea of a comfortable and integrated city environment, with residential, commercial, public and cultural spaces located within accessible walking distance. Officials noted that the approach is designed to reduce reliance on private vehicles while fostering a more sustainable and liveable urban environment.
The programme also included a visit to the Heydar Aliyev Centre. During the tour, guests were informed that the Centre’s activities are dedicated to preserving and promoting the statehood philosophy, ideology of Azerbaijanism and rich legacy of Azerbaijan’s National Leader, Heydar Aliyev. International media representatives were also introduced to extensive video and photographic archives documenting different stages of his life and public service, alongside a wide collection of exhibits.
While touring Icherisheher, the visiting journalists were introduced to Baku’s ancient history, rich cultural heritage and centuries-old urban traditions. The media delegation explored a number of historic architectural landmarks inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and received detailed insight into the preserved character and unique urban fabric of the Old City.
