From Old Courtyards to New Homes: How Urban Memory Shapes the Future Living Environment
Administration of the “Icherisheher” State Historical-Architectural Reserve, Nani Zhgenti Project | Architecture & Interior Design
This curated expert dialogue explores the historic Baku courtyard as a model of social infrastructure and examines how its principles can be integrated into contemporary housing development. While modern residential complexes often rely on advanced amenities, the session focuses on the courtyard as a system shaped by transitional spaces, visual connectivity, everyday interactions, intergenerational living, and collective rituals.
Using Bahar Residence as a partner case, the discussion analyzes how existing infrastructure can be transformed into a socially sustainable environment. Participants will evaluate the applicability of community-based models such as shared kitchens, tool libraries, spaces for elderly residents, and resident-led initiatives, supported by international parallels.
The session will and include a moderated discussion and voting process, leading to the formulation of “10 Principles of the Next-Generation Courtyard” as practical guidelines for socially integrated housing.
